It does work, but can't find the pictures again.
Spray it black, dry brush it grey and then wash it in a mix of black wash, pva and water, about 2, 1, 4 ratio and watch the magic as it dries. This will work with any colour just change the colour you dry brush with and use a matching wash in the mix.

mr2key - Hmmm... interesting, I'll try that out... maybe with one squad of 'Quins... it OK on any mini material (resin/metal/plastic etc.)? I'll prob dry-brush light blue... thanks for the tip.

That arrow model and display looks really good mate. As a big batman fan would love to see you paint up a batman model with a backdrop like you have done for your arrow model.
