I hope they take this opportunity to reflect on their market model but I suspect the leadership is too arrogant and removed from the hobby for that.

I am afraid you are right winstonsmith. Being new to this particular hobby and looking at how GW price and market it is hard to justify £30 for a model that can get lost down the back of a sofa! Not only are they cheap to make, just look at equivalent's on any Chinese knock off site or other companies doing the same for less, for example Kings Of War, but their pricing structure seems to be based purely on how many points a model is worth in a game or its rarity in any particular codex! Its ridiculous that they then push out update after update of codex and rules but they take no leap in moving the game forward by evolving the main rules. I have heard people state that they don't like the GW ethos and that if people do not like it then they should vote with their wallets, well guess what? They just have! Unfortunately GW seem to think that opening a surplus of 7 stores with every store now managed by a solitary staff member is the way to fix their share price. Oh well, I shall now step off my soap box and return to look at my Tau box set!

If this is the impetus to atcually listen to gamers and improve things than this could be a wake up call- but I suspect that corporate types at GW are to detached and too disniterested to care
The problem with GW is that they have been bereft of new ideas , creativity or imgagination for at least 10 years now . Their whole strategy seems to be churning the same , stale ideas endlessly and becoming a flagship for 3 game systems- one of which-LOTR was dependant on a film tie in . Perhaps if they had a more diversified product line they may be able to appeal to a wider audience, instead they killed off Blood Bowl, Mordheim, Necromunda etc and released nothing since .
I suspect that WARMAHORDES with its CCG approach to gaming has started to emerge as a viable contender to GW( though not for mass battle gaming which I like) Even Flames of War which has used a GW approach albeit with better customer care has taken a share of the amrkeyt from GW

Totally agree. I think they tried to market a game based on a film on the premise of capturing a younger audience. However the prices are too high for youngsters to fund on their own and guess what? When you get your £25 box of 10 rangers back home you have to assemble them and paint them! Then you have to tell Mum and Dad that you need more models, some rules, some terrain, dice, rulers and some friends to play it with!

the above arguments are all valid but we are looking at the figures in an insular way. It would be interesting to see how the other major producers are performing over the same period. I find it hard to believe their sales have not also fallen. The fact remains this has been a long resession, which is affecting peoples spending in all aspects of their life (especially with regards to non essentials). I remember my introduction as a Kid was through the £20 boxed games like Space hulk etc. You and a mate, £10 each and your away. They got secondary sales from us through the White Dwarf, paints, brushes etc but it was an affordable introduction which you could sell to your parents. I read a report recently that the average age of a wargamer is 35!! And that is more then evident at our own club. I think it is quite telling that GW now offer box sets selling for £7000!!!!!!
