Thick sulphurous smoke drifted lazily across the grove as the last tree was unceremoniously torn from the ground with a twisted, tortuous groan. The splintered stumps of once ancient woodland seemed to point accusingly at the dwarves encamped within the clearing. Thorgrim Stonehammer squinted into the darkening shadows that gathered upon the edges of the forest as he relieved himself into the now polluted waters of the pond. And then with startling speed the shadows coalesced to take upon fearsome shapes as the forest erupted with elemental fury. The Thistlewood had awoken!
A hail of arrows tore into the dwarves as they rushed to form a wall of iron and steel. Overhead, a cannon’s roar was heard but its crew had shot wide of their mark, if indeed a mark was ever had in the rushing tumult. Across the glade the unmistakeable rumble of gyrocopters was greeted with a defiant crash of shields as the dwarf line closed ranks. Their discipline was resolute even when the flame cannon lit up the darkening sky to illuminate the very forest itself come to destroy them.
Thorgrim Stonehammer watched wraithlike waywatchers slip from the shadows to overrun artillery; monstrous tree spirits tear down an airship and a treeman ancient sweep into the dwarven line with feral fury, unnerving his liege lord. He watched as another storm of arrows crashed into his ironclad brethren and a flame cannon succumb to the wild untamed rage of dryads. He watched and wondered if they would last the night.
And then the storm faltered, like waves broken upon the rocks the treeman fell. The suddenness of its passing a blow the elves of the Thistlewood were unable to withstand. And if Thorgrim could sing, he would sing of his Lord breathing flames of runic power that smote his enemy asunder. The storm had passed and the dwarves, battered and bloodied though they were, had weathered its passing and lived to tell the tale.
Yesterday Damon and I had a really enjoyable game of Warhammer with 1500 points of dwarves and wood elves. It was a good opportunity to see how the new dwarf army book worked and heralded the rise of the gyrocopter! I faced two, and although they were both destroyed they have the potential to disrupt your lines and can dish out damage as well. Definitely one to watch!
